Bills scramble for QB as reports of Taylor injury surface

Coach Rex Ryan had put the word out Monday that Taylor is “beat up right now,” and Tuesday’s addition of a third quarterback, Josh Johnson, to the 53 man roster was the first indication of escalated concern over Taylor’s health.According to an NFL source, Taylor “apparently is hurt pretty bad,” because the Bills spent a good portion of Monday and the first part of Tuesday trying address their quarterback depth in the event Taylor is out for the Bengals game and possibly longer.A team source said the Bills liked Johnson better than the other option they had for a potential understudy for Manuel, Dustin Vaughan, who would have to be promoted from the practice squad. However, before signing Johnson, an NFL source said, the Bills made an attempt to re sign Matt Simms whom they cut at the end of the preseason from the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad. They wanted Simms primarily because of his familiarity with the Bills’ playbook, which was more important to the team than the fact Johnson spent training camp with the Bengals.Simms turned the Bills down, the source said, for multiple reasons. One was a concern that, once the team no longer needed his services, he would again be released. “It might be only a few weeks, and then they’d say, ‘See ya!'” the source said. Another is Simms’ expectation that he would have a legitimate shot next year to become the Falcons’ No. 2 quarterback behind Matt Ryan, because it is unlikely Atlanta would use a high draft pick on a quarterback. Yet another reason is the distinct possibility that he could land a No. 2 spot with a team, such as the Houston Texans, that has struggled at quarterback since the start of the season. Before signing any potential quarterback, the Bills wanted to make sure he had an updated passport so he would be able to travel with the team to London for the Oct. 25 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium, according to an NFL source. The Bills have a bye the following week, giving Taylor extra time to heal.Taylor broke a Bills single game rushing record for a quarterback with 76 wholesale nba jerseys yards in last Sunday’s 14 13 victory against Tennessee. On a day when he struggled badly to complete passes, Taylor gave the offense a desperately needed lift with his legs. But it appears to have come at a price.Although Taylor reportedly was dealing with a potentially serious ankle injury before the Bills’ Oct. 4 loss against the New York Giants, he seemed to have no problems running and cutting against the Titans, gaining 26 and 22 yards (for a touchdown) late in the third quarter, and 24 in the fourth. On that run, Titans linebacker Zach Brown was penalized 15 yards for a horse collar tackle that caused Taylor to suffer the reported MCL sprain. Manuel took over for the next snap, but Taylor immediately returned. After returning, Taylor threw a 46 yard touchdown pass to Chris Hogan. Three plays later, on a 2 yard touchdown connection with Hogan, Taylor looked to be injured again, but stayed in the game.Since entering the NFL from the University of San Diego as a fifth round draft pick (106th overall) of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008, Johnson has started in five games of the 29 games he has played in the league. He has completed 96 of 177 pass attempts for 1,042 yards, five touchdowns, while throwing 10 interceptions. He also has rushed 44 times for 274 yards.Besides the Buccaneers, Johnson also has had stints with the San Francisco 49ers, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets and most recently the Indianapolis Colts. To make room for the quarterback, the Bills released kicker Billy Cundiff, whom they signed last week after releasing kickoff specialist Jordan Gay.If Manuel is in line to start against Cincinnati, the Bills are going to have to give him extensive practice repetitions, because he has not cheap denver broncos nfl jerseys had the full chance to do so after spending the first two weeks of the season as the No. 3 quarterback behind Taylor and Matt Cassel, who has since been traded to the Dallas Cowboys.
